guide to philadelphia

i've been trying to get together a guide to philly post about all my favorite thrifting, vintage, and (cheap) eating haunts, but the task keeps getting bigger and bigger. so i've decided i'll just have to do it in baby steps, and eventually i'll have a whole bunch up. i'll be tagging them 'philly guide' if you care to read them together. here goes!

Retrospect

retrospect is a pretty obvious choice, any tourist who's been down south street has no doubt wandered into this fairly large shop that lives somewhere in the middle of the thrifting to vintage spectrum. specializing primarily in 80s duds (that i'm pretty sure they find at local thrift stores), they do have some gems if you keep an eye out. constantly changing selection, lots of covetable shoes, purses, and coats, dollar records, and great couches that i wish weren't marked up to $300. the clothing prices are generally mid range, high for thrift goods but low for vintage, and they often have 50% markdowns. the sales ppl are, how do you say, too hip to care.. but that's true of most anywhere in philly, so get used to it.

things i didn't regret buying from here: a pink striped dress, plastic camera, navy keds

  8. the way you describe it reminds of beacons closet. how do you feel about the fact that thrift stores are cheaper . .would you rather thrift or go to these stores?

  9. Ooh, I totally have a love/hate relationship with Retrospect. It's good if you're trying to find cheap "vintage," but a lot of the stuff is overpriced for what it is. Most of it's from the 1980's.

Anyway, I love that you're doing a where to shop in Philly guide! I'm right outside of the city, and my aunt lives right off of South St., but I still find myself wondering where the hard-to-find spots are!
