freeway

freeway
last night i watched this kooky little movie from 1996 staring reese witherspoon & kiefer sutherland called freeway. it was a modern take little red riding hood set in the poor outer la area and was so b-movie silly + violent + a little wtf. you would never recognize elle woods in the foul mouthed, gun toting, shiv making, 'trick baby' that reese plays. oh yeah, and brittany murphy (rip) plays a drugged out prison lesbian. i'd wholly recommend it!!

philly thriftin'

this second installment of philadelphia guidance highlights the garage sale thrift store mish mosh that is Philly Aids Thrift. they are a charity organization with profits going to help people with aids. and amidst the junk they hawk, gems abound. i'd guess the mean ratio is 80% junk-20% gems. they are right below south street- in fact, almost directly south of the previously mentioned retrospect (have you been paying attention?).

pros: they always have free boxes set out, where i've gotten some books with neat covers and a yarn teapot clock thing i really didn't need. there's two floors! the second floor houses more clothes, lots of records(i've bought many of these, mostly >$1), changing rooms (rare for thrift stores, but this is a nicer place than your average salvo), a terrible excuse of a 'vintage' rack, and a dollar rack (on which i've found great stuff! such as a dior cami). oh also they play good music.
cons: most things of value are weeded out and priced higher- the kids who work here know whats hip (but still sometimes things get missed). theres a lot of junk nobody needs. sometimes i think creepers come here to stare at women. worst selection of shoes. also that terrible vintage rack- mostly poly, mostly XL, and there's always stuff from gap on it trying to masquerade.

In conclusion, if you are into thrifting it's an essential philly spot to hit, and you maybe-might-probably will find something great for $1!

alex thinks i look like a 30's hobo in this romper, but luckily i didn't have a stick and handkerchief laying around to use as a prop. instead this train case did the trick. if only i could actually travel so light!

boppin'
this sunday i'm selling 75% of my closet- vintage and new-, plus records and random stuff at the bi-annual punk rock flea market, with my stylish friend lily. so if anyone's around, come buy my junk! i'm really hoping to get rid of a lot, because it's actually nice to have a semi-bare closet (since everything is all bagged up from my last flea market- i know, i'm too lazy). i want to weed out my closet until it's streamlined to only things i actually wear! now wouldn't that be wonderful. i need to stop buying things without trying them on- the shop now has several dresses that are too big or too small but utterly cute.

guide to philadelphia

i've been trying to get together a guide to philly post about all my favorite thrifting, vintage, and (cheap) eating haunts, but the task keeps getting bigger and bigger. so i've decided i'll just have to do it in baby steps, and eventually i'll have a whole bunch up. i'll be tagging them 'philly guide' if you care to read them together. here goes!

Retrospect

retrospect is a pretty obvious choice, any tourist who's been down south street has no doubt wandered into this fairly large shop that lives somewhere in the middle of the thrifting to vintage spectrum. specializing primarily in 80s duds (that i'm pretty sure they find at local thrift stores), they do have some gems if you keep an eye out. constantly changing selection, lots of covetable shoes, purses, and coats, dollar records, and great couches that i wish weren't marked up to $300. the clothing prices are generally mid range, high for thrift goods but low for vintage, and they often have 50% markdowns. the sales ppl are, how do you say, too hip to care.. but that's true of most anywhere in philly, so get used to it.

things i didn't regret buying from here: a pink striped dress, plastic camera, navy keds

shewolf

shewolf
i feel like a teen boy in this silly fox & moon tee. i got it about 5 years ago when i was in austin touring U of T. I recently found it in a suitcase of old clothes and can't bear to let it go! when i was looking at different colleges, i bought something in nearly every city except the one i actually ended up moving to. got some discounted kate spade heels in chicago, a striped dress in savannah, some used books in raleigh... is it good or sad that i can remember the origin of all my material possessions so vividly?
