this second installment of philadelphia guidance highlights the garage sale thrift store mish mosh that is
Philly Aids Thrift. they are a charity organization with profits going to help people with aids. and amidst the junk they hawk, gems abound. i'd guess the mean ratio is 80% junk-20% gems. they are right below south street- in fact, almost directly south of the previously mentioned
retrospect (
have you been paying attention?).
pros: they always have free boxes set out, where i've gotten some books with neat covers and a yarn teapot clock thing i really didn't need. there's two floors! the second floor houses more clothes, lots of records(i've bought many of these, mostly >$1), changing rooms (rare for thrift stores, but this is a nicer place than your average salvo), a terrible excuse of a 'vintage' rack, and a dollar rack (on which i've found great stuff! such as a dior cami). oh also they play good music.
cons: most things of value are weeded out and priced higher- the kids who work here know whats hip (but still sometimes things get missed). theres a lot of junk nobody needs. sometimes i think creepers come here to stare at women. worst selection of shoes. also that terrible vintage rack- mostly poly, mostly XL, and there's always stuff from gap on it trying to masquerade.
In conclusion, if you are into thrifting it's an essential philly spot to hit, and you maybe-might-probably will find something great for $1!
